Liveable City

In preliminary experiences I found the city so live-able. I could felt the smell of city life in it’s public spaces. Here, social life is an important aspect of people life. Indeed, public realm is a place for social activities instead of a transitional space. That’s would be a great experience for myself.

During these years, I always asked myself: Why I can’t see any sign of social life in everyday experiences in open spaces. How we can bring this kind of social life to our urban places.  However, there were a great steam of social life there, I couldn’t feel it in public spaces. Here, story is different. I feel it everyday.

It seems, social life is shaped here by everyday experience in public realm and vice versa.

The Sounds of Difference

In a new community, you are difference. There is a different between things you see and knew. Your internal world seems so different with real/outer world. Some times there is a relation, you see what you saw/felt. After a while, when you became more familiar with new environment, these relationships between inner/outer increase.

In a diverse community – where there are so many different people like you- you don’t see one outer world. Indeed, it seems to you that there are so many distinctive worlds outside. Then you try to make a relation between your inner world and these external world. In this process, some relations are being strong while other doesn’t make sense to you any more. After a while, you are not absolutely a foregner, but there are some worlds and things which is not touchable/reachable for you yet.

It seems this sound of difference never quiets down.

How place absorbs

The university enterance from the street

Everyday when I arrive at the university, look for more sensual, pretty entrance. Just opposite the tram station, there is a road with some buildings in it’s two sides. It doesn,t seem interesting for me to pass so I always choose the above enterance which paved by stones and there are so many trees around it. Indeed, it’s a way paved by nature and beauty. It’s so refreshing for me before starting.

I thougt, how this place absorbs me with it’s unique qualities in comparison with other enterances. However it’s only an access road, it has more emotianal effect on me. Furthermore, I see other people prefer this way everyday.

If I want to compare this way to the ways I’ve experienced before, I found it more colorful by different people and languages I hear every time I cross it. The buildings reflect a culture too. But people effext is more sensible for me.

At Flinders Street Station

Flinders Street Station SketchThe Flinders street station is a famous pace for peolple in Melbourne. It’s a landmark for them in order to locate a meeting. Always you can see people , waiting for their friends, talking with their friends , there. It’s a big spcace for accessing trains, but it’s not all about train and journey. It’s a place for pause.

It’s colour and shape makes it different among other building in this city centre area, becoming a good sign in the city to meet. By the Federation square in rear and Yarra river at back of the station, it becomes a popular destination for people. The entire space is not only a corridor for trains access, it’s a place to live. I could see school-age boys/girls come to sit and talk with some sort of foods. Some old men sit, reading a newspaper and it’s architecture, resembles a culture of the city.

The First Experience

It’s the first post. From my point of view, this is the place you hear more about a city which I’m living there and the events and excited things which are important for me as a new commer to this city.

The first look was exciting. I chose the city centre for walking since I found some liveable places there. The Bourke St. has been renoweyted as a commercial space with big malls and exciting shopping centres. So it would be great for who love window-shopping!
There was a tram line at the middle of the street so you have to be carefull crossing the street. In the street, there is an old post office which is converted to a big shopping mall called OPG. This building is renovated with eye-absorbing luxury shops. In the same vain, the new design has used glass as divider for shops so you can see whole inner space clearly. At the end, there was a bar on two old columns of the old building.
At the street there are some good sounds merged with the ordinary noises of street. I saw two player when playing their instruments. That was interesting for people sitting around them listening to the playing music.
There were so many people from various nations there mostly Chinese people. In this environment, you regularly hear different speaking languages. Which is amazing for the first time for every visitors of Melbourne.
